Missing Jury Duty Scam

Missing Jury Duty Scam

June 9, 2017

You get a call saying you missed jury. You’ll be jailed, they say, unless you pay.

A telephone scam holding innocent Florida County residents hostage in fear of being arrested is running rampant once again, according to the Manatee County Clerk of Court.

A person claiming to be a clerk’s office official or law enforcement member will tell residents that they missed jury duty. Then the scammer will ask for personal information like date of birth or social security number to verify it’s you, then say that the only way to avoid jail time is to pay them “bail” in person, wire them money or take card information over the phone.

The clerk’s office said it will not call or email anyone asking for payment for missing jury duty. Official jury duty notices are sent by mail from the Manatee County Clerk of Court.
