Blue Ridge Now – Residents have reported a new scam to police, saying that callers posing as law enforcement have told them to pay fines with prepaid cards to avoid arrest for missing jury duty or court or for outstanding warrants.
Deputies took a report from a resident Wednesday, who said a female “trooper” had called and instructed them to place funds on a Green Dot card in order to avoid arrest, according to a release from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Thursday.
“These callers typically request the placement of funds on Green Dot cards for missing jury duty, not appearing in court after being subpoenaed or for having outstanding warrants,” the release states. “Please be aware these calls are fraudulent and should be reported. The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office does not collect money to resolve these matters.”
Sheriff Charles McDonald urges citizens to not provide Social Security numbers, credit card information, or information regarding bank accounts to unknown persons soliciting by phone or online.
