Wendy’s: Fast Food Chain Credit Card Breach

February 8, 2016

Wendy’s old-fashioned hamburgers and chocolate frosty’s are well-known, but what isn’t well known are the chances that your credit card information was compromised.

Wendy’s, the fast food chain, has recently announced that it’s investigating a possible breach within its system.

As of right now, the breach is only tied to certain locations. The issue was reported when banking industry sources noticed a pattern of card fraud, where each card had recently been used at a Wendy’s.

Wendy’s was informed of the potential breach, and has since hired a security firm to look into the issue further.

Bob Bertini, a representative of the restaurant chain, said, “We have received this month from our payment industry contacts reports of unusual activity involving payment cards at some of our restaurant locations. Reports indicate that fraudulent charges may have occurred elsewhere after the cards were legitimately used at some of our restaurants. We’ve hired a cybersecurity firm and launched a comprehensive and active investigation that’s underway to try to determine the facts.”

Full details of the scope of the breach are not yet available. It’s too soon to know for sure. But investigators hope to uncover how long the breach lasted, and which stores were targeted.

Reports of the fraud have primarily originated from banks on the East coast, but the national franchise has more than 6,500 locations worldwide.
